Setting up your first agent

A step-by-step walkthrough of creating your first LucyIQ agent, giving it knowledge, and getting it answering questions.

Getting started Last updated Sep 26, 2026

Before you start#

You'll set up your first agent from your LucyIQ dashboard. Setting up an agent takes three things: choosing what kind of agent it is, giving it some knowledge to answer from, and deciding where people will use it. You can change any of these later, so don't worry about getting everything perfect the first time.

Step 1 β€” Create the agent#

  1. Open your dashboard and choose an empty agent slot.
  2. Give your agent a name β€” this is what people see when they chat with it (for example, "Ava" or "Front Desk Helper").
  3. Choose the agent type that matches your goal. If you're helping staff find answers, choose Training. If you're answering customer questions on your website, choose FAQ or Website.

Your agent is now created, but it doesn't know anything yet β€” that's the next step.

Step 2 β€” Give your agent knowledge#

Your agent answers from your content, so the most valuable thing you can do is add knowledge. There are two ways, and you can use both:

Upload documents#

  1. Open Manage my Lucy and go to the Knowledge tab.
  2. Click Add document and choose your file. LucyIQ accepts PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and more.
  3. Your agent processes the file in seconds. When it's done, you'll see how many pages were added.

Connect your website#

  1. In Manage my Lucy β†’ Knowledge, enter your website address in Authorised website URL.
  2. LucyIQ reads your public pages and adds them to your agent's knowledge.

Good to know: your authorised website URL does double duty β€” it's also where your public chat is allowed to appear. If you leave it blank, your public chat stays switched off. Your internal and dashboard access still work.

Step 3 β€” Try it out#

Open your agent's Chat tab to chat with it right there in the dashboard. Ask it a few questions you know the answers to, and check that it responds from your content.

If an answer isn't quite right, you can fix it on the spot: tell Manage my Lucy the correct information and it saves the update for next time.

Step 4 β€” Put your agent where people will use it#

  • On your website: open your agent's Appearance tab, scroll to Add to your website at the bottom, and copy the code into your site. Your chat appears as a pop-up your visitors can open.
  • For your staff: share your subsite login, or use the public agent page if you've turned it on.

Adjusting how your agent sounds#

Every agent has a personality you can tune on its Rules tab. You can make it more formal or more casual, shorter or more detailed, and set how often it shows its sources. Start with the defaults β€” they work well β€” and adjust once you've seen it in action.
